Poker bankroll management — the 50 buy-in rule and everything else

Bankroll management is the most neglected skill in poker. Technically solid players ruin their bankroll simply because they play limits that are too high for their capital. A single normal downswing knocks them out of the game.

Why bankroll management is critical

Variance in poker is real and brutal. A player with a positive win-rate can lose over 10,000 consecutive hands. Without a sufficient bankroll, that normal downswing becomes fatal — no more funds to keep playing.

The basic rule: have enough buy-ins to survive downswings without changing your behavior or your limit.

Bankroll rules by limit (cash game)

NL2

€100

Minimum 50 buy-ins. Variance at NL2 is high, 20+ buy-in downswings are normal.

NL5

€250

Minimum 50 buy-ins. Same rule as NL2.

NL10

€500

50 buy-ins. At this level, there are more regulars and bigger swings.

NL25

€1,250

50 buy-ins. Move up with a confirmed bankroll AND a positive win-rate at the previous limit.

Rules for moving up and down in limits

Moving up a limit

Two conditions: have 50 buy-ins for the target limit AND show a confirmed positive win-rate over a reasonable volume at the current limit. One without the other isn't enough.

Moving down a limit

If your bankroll drops below 30 buy-ins for your current limit, move down to the lower limit immediately. No ego, no exceptions. Financial survival comes first.

Separate your poker bankroll from your personal money

Your poker bankroll is dedicated capital. Mixing it with everyday spending creates emotional bias and irrational decisions.

FAQ

Is the 50 buy-in rule too conservative?

For a recreational player with a moderately positive win-rate, 20-30 buy-ins can be enough. The 50 buy-in rule is intentionally conservative — for players who don't want to risk their entire bankroll.

What should I do with bonuses and rakeback?

Rakeback and Winamax bonuses can represent a significant share of income at the micro-limits. They are part of your bankroll and should be managed as such.

Can I play several limits at the same time?

Yes, but then use the bankroll of the highest limit as your reference. Playing NL5 and NL10 at the same time requires a full NL10 bankroll.
